Expert record selector and tastemaker Gilles Peterson decamped to Cuba to dispel his own musical myths about the red island. Here, he oversaw a project with celebrated local musician Roberto Fonseca that brought together new Cuban talent. Together, they disproved the notion that there’s nothing more to the country’s music scene than a certain pensioners social club. The results are impressive and musically varied, with CD 1 featuring gems such as the bright Arroz Con Pollo and the calming Think Twice. CD 2 faves include Oggure’s magical version of La Revolución Del Cuerpo and Danay‘s hopped grooves of Individual. This is a cool collection showing that the island has more to offer than politics, rum, cigars and the aforementioned Buena Vista.
