V/A – Sci-Fi Hi-Fi 5: Slam (Soma)
After four impressive volumes from various technoid lovers and a guitar driven offshoot from Sir Weatherall, Glasgow’s Slam finally bring us their own outing in the Sci-Fi Hi-Fi series. It is a compilation of cool techno treats, which demands careful listening in order to appreciate its intricacies and the shapes of the grooves. Jerky and bleepy efforts take centre stage, with winners including Plasmic’s strangely keyed Pearls On A String, Decimal’s creepy Eleanor and Slam’s own moody What’s On Your Mind? Slam give a good account of themselves here, which comes as no surprise considering the fact that Soma is their imprint and Sci-Fi Hi-Fi was their idea!
