The Cinematic Orchestra - Live At The Royal Albert Hall: 02/11/07 (Ninja Tune)
The Cinematic Orchestra is really a misleading title, as the outfit is the work of Jason Swinscoe, a few musical cronies and banks of electronic equipment. For this concert, recorded for posterity and released by Ninja Tune, the title is more appropriate, as the musicians totaled over 40 and included members of The Heritage Orchestra. Studio recordings have found The Cinematic Orchestra lacking dynamism, but that is not an issue with this live recording. In the hallowed surroundings of The Royal Albert Hall, The Cinematic Orchestra really lived up to their potential, with vocalists singing with real conviction and the musicians capturing the emotion and jazzy leanings of Swinscoe’s compositions to great effect. All That You Give is alive with glorious strings and heartfelt vocals, whilst Familiar Ground treads just that with an amazing spirit and Prelude is an orchestral dream. It would be a logistical nightmare, but if the CO could record albums as an orchestra in the future, then the Swinscoe’s collective could truly realise their potential.
