Speeka - Bonfire (Wah Wah 45s)
Speeka are a broken soul outfit with folktronic aspirations, who make music that doesn’t burn fiercely. Glowing embers is probably a better fire related analogy than “Bonfire” for this LP, as tracks such as the taut “Rag Doll“ and groovy “Lumberjack“ leave you feeling warm, but many of the instrumental tracks are as charismatic as a water doused barbeque. Guest vocalists Polly Paulusma and Ben Parker add heat to many of the compositions on the album, with the Paulusma assisted tracks providing the brightest glow. Wah Wah once again show they’re better at confounding the listening public instead of meeting musical expectations, with this polite long player from Speeka.
